A22 Godstone Road
11/05/2023
Crucial improvement works by SES Water are due to take place in Purley during the summer holidays, reducing the risk of disruption to water supply in the area. This will mean a section of the A22 Godstone Road, up to the Purley Cross roundabout, will be closed and traffic diversions will be in place.
As part of our current Business Plan, our pledge is for 100% of properties in our supply area (280,000) to be supplied by more than one treatment works by 2025, which will reduce the risk of supply failures and help move water from one area to another. This project forms part of a £45m programme of investment over the 15-year period from 2010 to 2025. It will directly benefit 27,000 properties in the Purley area and vastly improve the resilience of the local water supply network.
The summer of 2022 saw some water companies struggling to keep supply going because of rising temperatures and demand. It is critical there is infrastructure in place which can withstand these challenges and continue to provide a reliable source of water. These works are one way in which we are protecting your water supply.
To allow us to carry out these critical works, there will be a road closure in place, which will affect a section of the A22 Godstone Road and divert traffic through Coulsdon, Redhill, Godstone, and Whyteleafe. Clear signage will be in place ahead of, and during, the road to avoid any surprises or confusion. Pedestrian access to the affected roads will be maintained at all times meaning that local businesses will still be accessible by foot.
The road closure and diversions route will take effect on Saturday 22 July 2023 and the project is set to be completed on Sunday 3 September 2023. The diversions have been agreed with the highway authorities.
A spokesperson for SES Water, said “One of our customer commitments is to ensure 100% of properties in our area can to be supplied by two treatment works. This will increase the resilience of our customers’ water supply – for 27,000 homes and businesses in the Purley area - reducing the likelihood of interruptions in the future. We appreciate these works may cause inconvenience to members of the local community, and we are working closely with local authorities to ensure there is minimal impact on local residents and businesses”.
We are committed to informing local businesses and residents of the plans to close the A22 ahead of time and maintaining communication of key milestones throughout the works.
